WHOOSH!
KA-BOOOOM!
Woah, don’t panic — that was just a sound effect from my Time-Travel Boots. But here in Swansea, around 80 years ago, there were real explosions.
You’ve just landed in the middle of World War Two, when planes flew over dropping bombs in what was called The Blitz. Swansea got hit badly. Buildings were smashed, homes were lost — it was noisy, messy, and super scary.
But even louder than the bombs? The bravery of the people who stayed and helped.
Families stuck together, neighbours shared what little they had, and the city slowly rebuilt itself. Heroes everywhere!
But before all that — let’s rewind even further…
In the 1800s, a lot of Irish families moved here to Greenhill. Why? Because there was something really sad happening back home in Ireland— a big disaster called the Potato Famine.
Can you imagine? Their main food — potatoes! — stopped growing, and people didn’t have enough to eat. So they packed up and came to places like Swansea, looking for hope, safety, and a fresh start.
They came by boat, often with just a suitcase, and worked really hard to build new lives. They helped build churches, worked in factories and docks, and made this place their home.
In fact, at one point, 1 in every 10 people in Swansea was Irish! This area — Greenhill — became one of the main places Irish families settled.
And when the Blitz hit years later, in World War II? These communities stood strong. They helped each other, fixed what was broken, and filled the streets with love (and a bit of laughter too).
💬 STAMP IDEA: Draw a dancing potato with a suitcase — or a big heart wearing a flat cap! 🥔💼❤️
